This gauge includes 8 feet of capillary tubing. You CAN NOT shorten the tubing! It is filled with ether gas. When the gas expands, the needle on the gauge rises.
Autometer does offer other adapter fittings depending on your needs. The tube nut on the tubing MUST push the probe against an adapter fitting. That is how the probe seals correctly. From underneath the tube nut to the end of the probe is roughly 1-5/8". If that is too long, Autometer does have the 2270 and 2271 extensions (sold separately).
Autometer's mechanical transmission gear oil temperature gauges include the 2273 1/2" NPT pipe thread adapter fitting. Towards the top edge of the probe, there's a tapered seat that gets compressed between the 2273 adapter fitting and the 5/8-18 tube nut (usually blue).
