On the bottom of Performance Series shocks you'll notice it doesn't take an ordinary spanner wrench. On a Performance Series shock there's a thin groove cut into the end cap that you put a wire clip in and use this end cap removal tool with a dead blow mallet to remove it without marring the edges.
