This particular valve bolts directly into your fill plate. Discriminator valves prevent fuel from traveling up the vent line. There are two balls in a discriminator valve. One ball floats when fuel enters the valve. This is especially important if you're using a pressurized fill system. The other ball is heavy and uses gravity if you roll the vehicle over.

It's always a good idea to run a filter at the end of your vent line. For example K&N's 62-1040, 62-1130, 62-1080 or 62-1170. Obviously, do not stick the filter directly onto your discriminator valve.
