This press-fit retainer was usually found on Fox Performance Series shocks before Fox switched over to the 10-24 allen plug. If you have the style of shock that you fill with a long needle tool (see photo), then inside the shock body, at the very top of the body, you'll see this retainer.
People would thread a wood screw into the bottom of the retainer and use a slide hammer to pull it out of the shock body. Pressing it back into the shock body is way more difficult.

Fox also used this retainer inside 226-00-095 reservoir end caps on UTV shocks. If you have a stepped reservoir with an end cap that looks like this, this is what the inside of it looks like. You use a short needle valve with that end cap.
